Best Apps For Football News

This is probably the one that pleases me the most in all areas thus far. OneFootball covers hundreds of leagues and competitions worldwide. Users can pick the teams they follow, and hence news related to them will be displayed at the top.

It is packed with the latest news, videos, fixtures, scores, stats, and key dates for your favorite teams (football club or national teams).

There are of course the usual features:

Match line-ups: usually ready an hour before the game starts
Game overview: goals (players who score and assist), disallowed goals, substitutions, yellow and red cards
Live commentary: information before the game, wrap up after the game, what happens during the game (e.g. how the goal is scored, why the yellow card is given)
Instant push notification (alert you when a game commences and ends, or goals scored)
I’d say, the live commentary is quite fun to read. You can actually feel the excitement from the staff’s lively commentary. Please note that it is subject to games, some minor competitions may not include live commentary at all.

News are feeds sent from some popular sources, such as Tribal Football, Dugout, The Football Faithful, and last but not least, OneFootball itself. Generally, the reading experience is nice, however, sometimes you may see raw programming codes in a post. The problem may be caused during the feeding, as the structures and layouts are different here and there. It is a minor flaw, not a big deal at all.

PickAndTip football soccer Android iOS mobile phone news live score app matches games fans OneFootball
At times, it may have a bit inconsistent on its server-side, causing a delay in updating match information or even fail to connect. But, OneFootball is continuously improving, and overall a decent app for reading football news.

BeSoccer – Soccer Live Score
Over 10 million downloads, BeSoccer is one of the best apps of football live scores, news, stats, and commentary.

The Lineups section in Matches is one I like. It even shows players’ photos on the lineup, and when they are substituted. There are also performance ratings for each player, along with the average ratings of the entire team.

You can switch to the Rounds and Classifications (I think, table or ladder may be a better term) on the Matches page. Here are the results of other games in the same round, and the ladder, respectively.

Instead of a timeline for all, BeSoccer’s Events are categorized into: Goals, Cards, Changes, and Others (e.g. assists). So, you can check out each separately. Alternatively, if you prefer them altogether showing by minute, there is such an option at the bottom.

Also, matches are presented differently from OneFootball. Games are grouped into days as tabs, so you can click and jump to yesterday, today, tomorrow, and the next game day.

News is also classified into additional sections, like Most Read and Transfers. It would be a handful during the transfer deadline if fans want to follow up with the latest deals.

In summary, BeSoccer is quite thoughtful and serious about user experience. I enjoy its presentation and flexibility, the grouping of news and matches makes reading easy.

LiveScore: Live Sports Scores
This is another app with over 10 million users. As its name suggests, it seems to be more concentrated on the score section. I’d say, yes, the news part is a bit too brief in design.

The news section is a list of articles without anything eye-catching. In addition, unlike OneFootball and BeSoccer, there is no Related News under each story, to keep users staying and reading.

Scores are, on the other hand, with a better design. The date tabs are on top, so you can switch or click on the calendar icon to jump to a certain date.

There is even something interactive with fans, i.e. a simple poll of which team wins or draws, for each match.

However, the commentary is too brief, for instance, “G O O O A A A L – Cristiano Ronaldo is on target!”. There is no detail about how things built up and led to the goal. This may be subject to the nature of matches, as big games may be presented with more information. Or, more detail would be available, when the schedule is not as busy and tight.

I’d say, if you focus on checking the score, LiveScore should please you. Yet, if you are to read football news, then there are better options at the moment.

FotMob – Soccer Live Scores
Yes, again… this is another app having 10 million users. You can see how popular football/soccer is in the world!

The news source is delivered from FotMob itself. There are videos, like interviews, within some articles. Thumb up for this, as the video is loaded quickly. The default setting is autoplay when connecting with Wi-Fi, which you can set otherwise.

Each piece of the news shows the categories it belongs to. So, readers can follow those they are interested in, such as competition, teams, players, or managers.

There are also some Related News suggested for you at the bottom of an article.

The matches are grouped into different competitions, which is the default. There is another great option, “Sort By Time”, so you can follow games finished, progress, or coming up when you open the app.

Ticker or commentary is more lively in FotMob app. You can see a big heading named “Red card!” in red with a description of what actually happens. There are others, “Yellow card” in yellow, “Assist” in blue, and “Goal!” in green, so you can catch up easily. Most other apps are presenting in a relatively dull or plain fashion.

FotMob also holds polls for matches, but aside from which is the winning team or a draw, you are asked if you think “Will both teams score?”, or “Will there be more than 2.5 goals?”. More fun here, especially if you are interested in betting.

On the Lineup tab, there are photos of players shown, including the benches and managers. Plus, it also shows information about who is unavailable, for example, injury and suspension.

FotMob is a good option and has done well in each aspect. It is worth trying if you consider installing a football news app with good live score coverage.

Goal Live Scores
This app is from the popular website, Goal.com. It differs from another app Goal.com, which is like a mobile version of itself.

PickAndTip football soccer Android iOS mobile phone news live score app matches games fans Goal
As expected, news on this app is fed from Goal.com. It has been one of the best sources of football news for years and even provides multi-language versions according to your location.

So, here comes the problem:
I couldn’t find a way to switch the app’s language. I’d prefer reading news in English, rather than the default language of my phone. (You know, the names of players and teams are often translated… inconsistently, so I’d prefer news in English.)

In Matches, the menu items are in other languages, while the players’ names are actually in English.

The commentary is great though, which is in detail. It covers more than events, such as goals, cards, and substitutions. Therefore, fans can follow up all the gameplay, like a save from the goalkeeper. Plus, there are also useful statistics during a match, for instance, “Berghuis is the first Netherlands player to score the opening goal in consecutive games since Depay managed it in November 2017”.

News in Goal Live Scores has dedicated sections for photo galleries and videos. They are not only a few in the section, and not up-to-date, though.

This is okay but has room to improve in various areas. If you like Goal.com news, you may want this as your live score app. An option about language would be welcomed.

365Scores – Live Scores and Sports News
This is not exactly a football news app, as it also covers NBA, NFL, NHL, Wimbledon, and more sports.

Let’s look at its news section. They are from Daily Mail, Express, or The Independent. When you click on an article, it is just an abstract of the news. You need to click “READ MORE” and jump to the source website and read. This is not ideal!

In the Matches section, the lineup is presented on a 3D pitch, which is cool. Commentary is nicely designed, combining with an eye-catching design and pretty detailed descriptions of gameplay. You can choose to show the top commentaries only, or all of them.

A great feature is the “BUZZ” tab in Matches. Fans can see the highlights of goals, cards, or saves. This is particularly good if you are on the other side of the world, and have missed the game. You no longer need to search for highlights elsewhere on the web. Just check the score, and watch the goals in the 365Scores app!

Another interesting addition is the “QUIZZES“, where you can find the icon floating on the screen. Let’s test your knowledge about football, for example:

Guess team logos: guess a team name by its logo
Guess the players: you are presented with a player’s photo, simply fill in his name
Guess the teams: make a guess on a football club, based on a lineup (e.g. playing in a 4-3-3 formation, the goalkeeper is a Brazilan, center backs are from England and Portugal,…)

best apps for fantasy football news

  1. NFL Fantasy Football
    (Android, iOS: Free)

Because it’s sponsored directly by the NFL itself, this app draws the latest news and player stats directly from the source. You’ll even get news and videos of greatest hits related to your players each week. Users can join existing leagues or start their own and invite friends. New players may find the drafting process somewhat confusing, with options for standard, auction and live lobby drafts, but the mock draft setting should give even the most clueless user plenty of time to figure out how draft day will go. Other strengths are the easy lineup configurations and ability to set up trades.

  1. Yahoo Fantasy Sports
    (Android, iOS: Free)

Yahoo has a huge online news presence and was an early adopter of the fantasy sports world. Not only will this app let you create and join fantasy football leagues, but also includes baseball, basketball and hockey. Written and video news clips related to your teams is integrated through Yahoo Sports and Rotoworld, providing analysis and data on your players. If you choose, this fantasy football app also offers the unique option to play in daily or weekly games to win real money.

  1. CBS Sports Fantasy
    (Android, iOS: Free)

Similar to Yahoo, this fantasy sports app includes but is not limited to football. Like other competitors, CBS Sports enables you play in leagues within the app using linked data and analysis, however, their features go a step beyond. The varied statistics, projections, player news and rankings are much more in-depth than other apps, and draw on the experienced sports news reporters and commentators employed by the CBS company. Even if you prefer to run a league in another platform, you can use the analysis and projection features from CBS Sports to inform your play in other fantasy football apps.

  1. Rotowire Fantasy Football Draft Kit
    (iOS: $4.99)

The limitations of this app are immediately obvious, in that you must own an Apple device to play, and unlike its major competitors, there is a cost to download. However, Rotowire finds innumerable ways to make this app worth the cost, and has a long-standing reputation to back up their price. The tools included in the “kit” let players customize complex league rosters with scoring settings to create an easy to read “cheat sheet” that automatically updates each week. Players can use the tools to make optimized draft picks, run mock tests, see projections and integrate tailored analysis. Ultimately, no matter which platform you play through, this kit is a powerful boost for your team’s performance.

  1. Footballguys Fantasy Football Draft Dominator
    (Android, iOS: $4.99)

Another paid fantasy football companion app, this draft assistant is more of a team optimizer than a platform for the team itself. Customize the settings to match your league’s and then take advantage of their adaptive rankings to get the edge in keeping your roster in the top tier. The updating player watch and avoid lists become even more crucial as injuries and penalties increase during the season and can help you make last minute bench changes with up to date information.
