The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 is the latest and greatest smartwatch from Samsung. With new features like a bigger display, improved fitness tracking, and enhanced digital health, it’s clear that Samsung is looking to compete with Apple on the smartwatch front.
But with so many smartwatches out there, how can you tell which are worth your time? I’ve been using the Galaxy Watch for a few weeks now, so let me share some of my favorite apps for it.
My top app is Sleep Cycle alarm clock. This app tracks your sleep patterns throughout the night and wakes you up in your lightest sleep phase. It also lets you set multiple alarms so that if one doesn’t go off, another will automatically take its place.
The next app I love is Spotify Running + Gym (which works on Android phones too). You can download music straight onto your watch or listen to playlists downloaded onto your phone with no streaming or cellular data required! It also has an amazing running coach feature that tells you how far you’ve run and how many calories you’ve burned while listening to music through built-in speakers on your watch or headphones plugged into them!

Just about everyone knows about Spotify these days. It’s the go-to music streaming app for hundreds of millions of users. Featuring extensive playlists from nearly every genre of music, podcasts, full discographies of numerous bands and artists, and much more.
With Spotify on your Galaxy Watch 4, you can use the app as a controller for music streaming on your phone or you can choose to download your music to the watch. Thus turning it into a music player for a pair of connected Bluetooth headphones or earbuds.

Without a doubt this is one of the best apps to have on your Galaxy Watch 4. Though it does require a subscription if you want Spotify Premium, you can use the app without a monthly cost if you’re willing to listen to periodic ads.

Everyone needs a little help getting around now and again. And whether you constantly struggle with directions or just aren’t familiar with a new city, Google Maps on your Galaxy Watch 4 is one of the best apps to have around. While you could easily whip out your phone and get more features, using the app on your watch is a little more convenient and efficient. Not to mention it might be your only option if you have your hands full.
You can simply launch the app with a tap of your finger then tap the mic button to speak any commands for directions. Sure the screen is small. But if you’re in a pinch and need a quick hit of information on where to go, this can be an invaluable tool.

Calm is a great app for meditation, sleep and just general improved mindfulness. You’ll need a pair of Bluetooth headphones or earbuds connected to the watch to use this app. Or, connected to your phone if you’re using the Calm Wear OS app as a controller.
The Wear OS app also features a Calm breathing tile and the ability to view your daily meditation minutes. If you use Calm on your smartphone or tablet, then you will definitely want to use it on your watch as well.

Google Pay wasn’t available on the Galaxy Watch 4 at launch. Once it made its way to the device though, users who prefer it over Samsung Pay can now use the Galaxy Watch 4 to pay for goods and services with a tap of their wrist.

You’ll still need to unlock the screen to finalize payment. But you’ll need to do the same thing using your phone. So this saves you the step of having to pull your phone out of your pocket.
If you’re a Google Pay user, this is definitely one of the best apps to have on the Galaxy Watch 4. Especially now with how many places accept contactless payments these days.

The quintessential app for installing new watch faces on your Galaxy Watch 4. Facer is a massive library of watch faces for smartwatches and contains both free and paid options. It also has a huge community of users with many of the designs being user-created.
Additionally, there’s a good chance you’ll find something that fits your personal tastes. As we’ve found it to be pretty difficult to come across a particular watch face theme that the app didn’t have. Love anime? There’s plenty of cool anime watch faces on Facer.
There’s also a ton of functional ones that can integrate well with installed apps and features. You’ll also find watch faces with animated backgrounds and more. If you’re using a Galaxy Watch 4, you want this app.

If you’re like us, you probably aren’t typing or responding to messages on your smartwatch a whole lot. But that doesn’t mean you won’t ever use it. Messages lets you easily see incoming notifications of texts you get on your smartphone. You can then reply to those messages right from the watch if you don’t feel like pulling your phone out.
Whether you want to type out the message using taps on the keyboard (don’t do this, it’s a pain), or use the mic button to speak your response, the Messages app can handle it. All directly on the watch. Then all you have to do is hit send, and boom. Done.

Have you ever been out and about and needed to jot down a quick note or reminder to pick something up or do something before you head home? Google Keep is the perfect tool for making little notes like this and ensuring you don’t forget.
It’s also a great way to save links, and my personal favorite, for creating shopping lists. In fact, the shopping list feature might be the best possible use case scenario. Thanks to the little check boxes that pop up which you can tap and mark off once you’ve placed the item in your cart.
Best of all is you can view and create lists on the watch as well. So there’s really no limitations to this version of the app. Which is great because viewing and interacting with a list on the watch is insanely convenient. Naturally, Google Keep on the Galaxy Watch 4 supports voice typing and tap typing. Though if you’re not going to speak your notes, we’d suggest using the gesture typing instead. It’s easier than using the on-screen keyboard.

It wouldn’t feel quite like a Samsung smartwatch without the inclusion of SmartThings. The SmartThings app is an easy way to control all of your smart home devices that are compatible with the SmartThings platform. Whether it’s turning on or off your lights, starting a load of laundry, or seeing who’s at the door using your smart doorbell, SmarThings makes it easy to manage smart devices around the home.
Like other platforms, you can also use it away from home as long as you’re connected to the internet. And chances are your watch will be connected most of the time. You can also use the app to configure device settings. Overall, it’s a pretty useful app. And like the rest of the apps on this list, it’s one of the best ones to have on your Galaxy Watch 4 if your smartphone either isn’t nearby or you just don’t want to pull it out of your pocket.

YouTube Music is a decent alternative for a music streaming app on your watch if you aren’t a Spotify user. And it may be the only worthwhile option for people who want to bundle their YouTube Music Premium subscription with a YouTube Premium subscription.
Like with Spotify, you can use the app on your watch to manage playback of songs that are streaming from the app on your smartphone. Or if you prefer to keep your phone at home while you’re out exercising, you can download your YouTube Music playlists and songs to the watch for offline playback instead.

This is one of our favorite apps on this list. The Samsung Calculator is already pre-installed on the Galaxy Watch 4. But we like this better because of an additional useful feature. The currency conversion calculator which is extremely useful if you’re traveling.
Now the smartphone version of the app has a lot more features than the Wear OS version. But you can still use the currency converter on the watch app. And that’s one thing the pre-installed calculator app can’t do. So if you travel a lot and could use that sort of feature at your fingertips, definitely pick up this app for your Galaxy Watch 4.

Aesthetic heart rate graph.
What We Don’t Like
Very short heart rate log.
Simple app with only one purpose.
Not 100% medically accurate.
There are a number of heart rate monitoring apps available for the Galaxy Watch, but one of the best is the Heart Rate Graphic app.
It’s one of the few that offers not just your present active heart rate, but also a log of your heart rate over the last 240 seconds (4 minutes).
The app displays your active heart rate and total time the app has been logging your heart rate. Under this is the screen-wide chart that displays the four-minute log of your heart rate.
It’s a useful way to make sure your heart rate stays in a target zone during your workouts.

The main screen offers three families of exercises to choose from:
Chest and Biceps

Legs and Abs
When you tap on any one of these, you can swipe your finger across the watch screen to scroll through the available exercises.

For Your Smart Home: TizMo (WeMo Control)
Screenshot of TizMo Galaxy Watch app.
What We Like
Convenient control of smart home.
Supports many devices.
Easy to use interface.
What We Don’t Like
Wi-Fi can drain watch battery.
My not support your devices.
Need to be on same Wi-Fi network.
TizMo is a useful app if your house is loaded with lots of WeMo smart home devices like plugs, switches, and lights. WeMo devices connect directly to your wireless network rather than using a hub, so connecting to them with an app is very simple.
The TizMo Galaxy Watch app does require you to enable Wi-Fi on your smart watch. But once you do, the TizMo scans your network and identifies all connected WeMo devices you can control from the app.
Controls are very simple. You just swipe your finger up or down to find the WeMo device and then tap the switch to toggle the device on or off.

Best for Automation: Triggers (IFTTT)
Triggers (IFTTT) ($1.99)
What We Like
Versatile app.
Integrates with many smart home devices.
Use to control cloud services.
What We Don’t Like
Complex to configure.
Requires an IFTTT account.
Not ideal for novice users.
Triggers is a Galaxy Watch app that takes a little more effort than other apps to set up, but once you do you can control far more devices in your home than any other app. It costs $1.99, but it’s well worth the price.
The Triggers app lets you set up your watch so you can trigger what’s called a “webhook” in the web-based IFTTT service. IFTTT is a very simple cloud-based automation website that lets you connect many devices and services that you can control remotely through the service.
Once you’ve set up your free IFTTT account, type webhooks into the search field, click on the Webhooks link, and set up your free webhooks account. Once you do, you’ll see a special URL with a long code at the end of it. Make a note of that code.
Next, set up the IFTTT Triggers app. When you open the app, click on the menu icon at the upper right corner and click Set IFTTT Key. In this area, enter the long code from the end of the URL your recorded above.
Now you’re ready to create triggers in IFTTT that you can trigger with your Galaxy Watch!
Screenshot of IFTTT Webhook mobile app.
Here’s how you set up IFTTT triggers to control from your watch:
In IFTTT, click on My Applets and then click on New Applet.
Click on This, and type Webhooks into the search field, and click on the Webhooks link.
Click on Receive a web request.
Give the Event a name. For example to turn on the office light, name it “Office Light”.
Click on That, and then search for any service you want to trigger. If you want to trigger a WeMo device, you can search for WeMo and choose what kind of WeMo device you want to trigger.
IFTTT is integrated with a whole family of smart home devices you can set up to control from your watch. Using an IFTTT Webhook integrated with the Trigger app on your phone and your watch, you can control almost anything with your Galaxy Watch.

Another very useful Galaxy Watch app is the Wrist Camera app. This app works in tandem with the Wrist Camera app. It costs $3.99, but considering the functionality this is a steal.
Once you have both apps installed, you can launch the app on your watch and see the camera view on your phone.
It’s a easy way to remotely control the camera on your phone directly from your watch. Set up your phone and take group photos where you’re included!
You can install the free version just to see how it works, but to keep using it permanently you’ll need to buy the full version.

Each memo is stored in a list that you can swipe through to play it again later. Record a grocery list at home that you can listen to at the store. Or record someone telling you their address or phone number so you can save it later when you have time.
Screenshot of the Galaxy Watch speech-to-text app.
If you turn on the Speech-to-text feature, the app will instantly convert your recordings to a text note that you can view later whenever you like.

What We Like
Extremely useful.
Never get lost.
Accurate directions.
What We Don’t Like
Standalone GPS mode drains the battery.
Navigation directions even while using phone.
Awkward watch interface.
The navigation app is probably one of the most useful Galaxy Watch apps of all. It’s especially useful when you’re walking the city streets and need an easy way to navigate to a new location.
It works in concert with the Gear Navigator app installed on your phone.
How it works:
Launch the Navigator app on your watch.
Launch Google Maps on your phone.
Initiate Google Maps navigation.
Follow the navigation steps on your watch.
This is especially useful while using walking navigation mode in Google Maps. Your watch will provide you with turn by turn directions at every street corner.
