Everyone needs a little help getting around now and again. And whether you constantly struggle with directions or just aren’t familiar with a new city, Google Maps on your Galaxy Watch 4 is one of the best apps to have around. While you could easily whip out your phone and get more features, using the app on your watch is a little more convenient and efficient. Not to mention it might be your only option if you have your hands full.
You can simply launch the app with a tap of your finger then tap the mic button to speak any commands for directions. Sure the screen is small. But if you’re in a pinch and need a quick hit of information on where to go, this can be an invaluable tool.

Calm is a great app for meditation, sleep and just general improved mindfulness. You’ll need a pair of Bluetooth headphones or earbuds connected to the watch to use this app. Or, connected to your phone if you’re using the Calm Wear OS app as a controller.
The Wear OS app also features a Calm breathing tile and the ability to view your daily meditation minutes. If you use Calm on your smartphone or tablet, then you will definitely want to use it on your watch as well.

Google Pay wasn’t available on the Galaxy Watch 4 at launch. Once it made its way to the device though, users who prefer it over Samsung Pay can now use the Galaxy Watch 4 to pay for goods and services with a tap of their wrist.

You’ll still need to unlock the screen to finalize payment. But you’ll need to do the same thing using your phone. So this saves you the step of having to pull your phone out of your pocket.
If you’re a Google Pay user, this is definitely one of the best apps to have on the Galaxy Watch 4. Especially now with how many places accept contactless payments these days.

The quintessential app for installing new watch faces on your Galaxy Watch 4. Facer is a massive library of watch faces for smartwatches and contains both free and paid options. It also has a huge community of users with many of the designs being user-created.
Additionally, there’s a good chance you’ll find something that fits your personal tastes. As we’ve found it to be pretty difficult to come across a particular watch face theme that the app didn’t have. Love anime? There’s plenty of cool anime watch faces on Facer.
There’s also a ton of functional ones that can integrate well with installed apps and features. You’ll also find watch faces with animated backgrounds and more. If you’re using a Galaxy Watch 4, you want this app.

If you’re like us, you probably aren’t typing or responding to messages on your smartwatch a whole lot. But that doesn’t mean you won’t ever use it. Messages lets you easily see incoming notifications of texts you get on your smartphone. You can then reply to those messages right from the watch if you don’t feel like pulling your phone out.
Whether you want to type out the message using taps on the keyboard (don’t do this, it’s a pain), or use the mic button to speak your response, the Messages app can handle it. All directly on the watch. Then all you have to do is hit send, and boom. Done.

Have you ever been out and about and needed to jot down a quick note or reminder to pick something up or do something before you head home? Google Keep is the perfect tool for making little notes like this and ensuring you don’t forget.
It’s also a great way to save links, and my personal favorite, for creating shopping lists. In fact, the shopping list feature might be the best possible use case scenario. Thanks to the little check boxes that pop up which you can tap and mark off once you’ve placed the item in your cart.
Best of all is you can view and create lists on the watch as well. So there’s really no limitations to this version of the app. Which is great because viewing and interacting with a list on the watch is insanely convenient. Naturally, Google Keep on the Galaxy Watch 4 supports voice typing and tap typing. Though if you’re not going to speak your notes, we’d suggest using the gesture typing instead. It’s easier than using the on-screen keyboard.

SmartThings
Samsung Smartthings AH NS 02

It wouldn’t feel quite like a Samsung smartwatch without the inclusion of SmartThings. The SmartThings app is an easy way to control all of your smart home devices that are compatible with the SmartThings platform. Whether it’s turning on or off your lights, starting a load of laundry, or seeing who’s at the door using your smart doorbell, SmarThings makes it easy to manage smart devices around the home.
Like other platforms, you can also use it away from home as long as you’re connected to the internet. And chances are your watch will be connected most of the time. You can also use the app to configure device settings. Overall, it’s a pretty useful app. And like the rest of the apps on this list, it’s one of the best ones to have on your Galaxy Watch 4 if your smartphone either isn’t nearby or you just don’t want to pull it out of your pocket.

YouTube Music is a decent alternative for a music streaming app on your watch if you aren’t a Spotify user. And it may be the only worthwhile option for people who want to bundle their YouTube Music Premium subscription with a YouTube Premium subscription.
Like with Spotify, you can use the app on your watch to manage playback of songs that are streaming from the app on your smartphone. Or if you prefer to keep your phone at home while you’re out exercising, you can download your YouTube Music playlists and songs to the watch for offline playback instead.

This is one of our favorite apps on this list. The Samsung Calculator is already pre-installed on the Galaxy Watch 4. But we like this better because of an additional useful feature. The currency conversion calculator which is extremely useful if you’re traveling.
Now the smartphone version of the app has a lot more features than the Wear OS version. But you can still use the currency converter on the watch app. And that’s one thing the pre-installed calculator app can’t do. So if you travel a lot and could use that sort of feature at your fingertips, definitely pick up this app for your Galaxy Watch 4.

Why wouldn’t you want to browse the web from your wrist? It might seem odd to include a full-blown browser on this list, but Samsung Internet Browser does have its benefits. The home page consists of a list of bookmarks, which you can populate with your favorite websites. Browsing is an odd but decent experience on the small screen, but you can also send the page to your phone for a better look.

Gaining access to your notes from your wrist is incredibly useful. Google Keep streamlines this process on Wear OS, syncing with your phone and web scribbles. The latter is especially useful if you’re unable to type on your watch while on the go.
SimpleWear

Smartwatches often display phone notifications, but what if you wanted to change or view your phone’s settings? SimpleWear is an innocuous little app that you probably didn’t know you needed. It effectively acts as an information and settings relay for your phone, mirroring the battery life status of your phone on your watch. It also enables access to quick settings toggles, including sound profile, Wi-Fi, location, phone lock, and more. It can also be set as a tile, adding to its utility.
Wear Gesture Launcher
Price: Free
Although it’s no longer under active development, this app still has plenty to offer Galaxy Watch 4 users. Wear Gesture Launcher lets Galaxy Watch 4 owners map different apps to letters or shapes drawn on the watch face. Essentially, this lets you bypass the crowded app drawer on Wear OS 3 and go directly to an app you’ve set a shortcut to. Operation is swift, but the learning curve isn’t completely flat. You’ll need to remember where on the display you’ve placed the launcher’s hot zone to activate it, too.
C25K
Price: Free / In-app purchases
c25k wear os 3 galaxy watch 4
C25K’s claim to fame is its two-month program which aims to help couch potatoes morph into regular runners. Like the Fitbit app, the Wear OS layout is simple. The app will display the workout day you’re currently on. You can also select another day’s program using the menu. While there are plenty of other fitness apps out there, we enjoy C25K’s no-fuss layout, especially on Wear OS.
Strava
Price: Free / $7.99 per month / $59.99 per year
Strava is one of the best-known fitness apps out there and a must-have if you’re into multisport. The app records many activities, from runs to bike rides to swims, and a host of additional statistics, metrics, and real-time data. Don’t like training alone? Strava has a host of social features baked in, too. If you’re not too serious about working up a swear, Samsung’s native Health app and your imagination should do just fine, but Strava does help when it comes to keeping up a routine.

Customization is part of the smartwatch experience, so an app that allows you access to various styles is a must. Facer does just that. Already established as a Wear OS app, Facer is also available to Samsung Galaxy watch users and provides similar functionality.
The app allows users to tweak various elements of their watch face, sample a bevy of designs from other users, and create their own faces if they’re so inclined. Facer requires a companion app for Samsung watches and the primary app for Android phones.
Here WeGo

Here WeGo
Here WeGo is the most popular mapping app on the Samsung Galaxy Store. The app provides watch users with a real-time, interactive map complete with audio navigation and alerts. Offline maps support also makes Here WeGo an excellent companion for tourists, while traffic info lets you better understand how long a taxi across town may take.
Although it’s not quite Google Maps and lacks that social aspect, Here WeGo is an excellent navigation app in a pinch for the Galaxy watch.

Under Armour’s MapMyRun is another quintessential app for regular runners. While it does lack the versatility of Strava, it provides specific and acute details catering to runners. Heart rate monitoring, a live map, and goal-setting smarts add to the experience.
Shake Launcher

Shake Launcher transforms shake gestures to shortcuts to quickly load apps on your Samsung Galaxy watch. Although it’s a paid app, it does add a pretty smart level of interaction to the watch. Shake Launcher lets users launch set apps after several predetermined shakes of the wrist. These movements can be anything from one shake up to 10.
The app can also function when the screen is off, and a delay can also be added to ensure you don’t open the same app continuously. It’s great if you hate navigating your display or want to launch key apps as quickly as possible.

Samsung SmartThings is a must-have app for those who own other Samsung smart home devices. For instance, air conditioner owners can adjust the thermostat from their wrists. As one of the most popular music streaming services, Spotify may be one of the most obvious installs for Samsung Galaxy Watch users. The service has a capable wrist app, too. Premium users can download tracks and podcasts to the watch itself and stream them to wireless earphones. It’s a perfect combination for those who like catching up on charts while running or doing chores around the house. Of course, you need to pay for a Spotify membership to download tracks and peruse the full library, but this app might make it worthwhile.

If you’re worried about occupying storage space on your phone, the app will offload the data to your Samsung phone when possible.

Wrist Flashlight
Wrist Flashlight is as simple as apps get. As its name suggests, it turns your Samsung Galaxy watch into a torch or accent light. It’s excellent if you need dim light to navigate dark areas or alert motorists of your presence while on a nighttime run.
Unlike other torch apps for Galaxy watches, Wrist Flashlight can also glow red, orange, or blue, along with the more traditional white. Brightness can also be adjusted by using the watch bezel or display, so you don’t blind fellow passengers or yourself during nighttime flights.
