With the year coming to an end let’s make a list of the best apps, tools, and plugins or features available for the Surface Family as of December 2019. These threads have been super helpful to me over the years but I think the last major thread like this was a couple years ago. Post away and I’ll edit everything back into an easy to use master list in a couple of days. If things go well maybe the mods will sticky a new thread annually.

Microsoft Edge – your best bet when running off battery but struggles with streaming Google services (Play Movies, YouTube)
Microsoft Chromium Edge
Google Chrome – A must have for streaming Google proprietary services, also heavily recommended if using the Google ecosystem
Mozilla Firefox – more recommended these days but not sure why, please help me out! May eat battery on Surface devices
Digital Drawing and Painting
Adobe Creative Cloud – Industry standard for a variety of uses, expensive if you aren’t using it professionally
Adobe Fresco – Great UWP raster & vector based drawing & painting app, with convincing watercolor and oil paint live brushes (tip: disable CC services from start-up if not in use as they are always reading/writing to disk)
Clip Studio – often recommended, goes on sale frequently
Autodesk Sketchbook – now free, innovative pie menu interface and natural media drawing and sketching with additional features
Mischief – apparently dies 12-31-2019, sketching app that can upscale and downscale drawings without degredation
Leonardo – Infinite canvas raster based drawing app, with nice UI features, but doesn’t support pen tilt yet
Lazy Nezumi – a line smoothing app?
Concepts – Innovative infinite canvas vector based drawing app, with the feel of a raster app, kinda like Mischief. It’s popular on the iPad, and being rebuilt from the ground up as UWP, not a lazy port
Note Taking Apps
OneNote – head over to r/onenote for a more thorough review than you ever wanted. There is a stand alone and Office 2016 version that both have perks and draw backs. Easy to use and highly recommended
Nebo.app – elegant note taking software with export options. Similar to and reminiscent of the Apple Newton MessagePad’s note-taking capabilities and interface
PDF Editors
Drawboard PDF – Allows you to draw on and edit PDFs, highly recommended by r/Surface

Windows 10: Get around using touch and tablet mode. This doesn’t apply to Windows 11.

GestureSign (Create custom Windows and app touch gestures, such as 4 finger tap for CTRL+F find/search, 5 finger tap to bring up touch keyboard, 3 finger swipe down to close tab, 3 finger swipe up to undo close tab, 3 finger swipe left/right to move to next tab, 2 finger tap to undo, 3 finger tap to redo, 5 finger swipe left/right to switch between virtual desktops, or 5 finger swipes to splitscreen snap (great in combination with AquaSnap), etc etc) (For Windows 11, it’s recommended to remap the 3 finger swipe tab gestures to 2 finger swipe, and disable the 4 and 5 finger swipe gestures for switching between apps and virtual desktops, so that they don’t conflict with the built-in Windows 11 touch gestures).
Consider installing the latest Intel gfx drivers to enable the latest gfx features and bug fixes, and game optimizations.

Next-gen paint program currently specialized in Eastern ink painting. It features important breakthroughs in recent history of digital painting technology: 1. 3D brushes allowing expressive strokes as if done wielding a real brush. 2. Truly natural ink (watercolor) flows giving you the charm of water-based media. 3. Vector-like 32k output with raster richness.
The development traces back to 1999 when Computer Graphics researcher Nelson Chu started to devise a novel method to simulate a brush in 3D. By wielding such a virtual brush, you can make vastly different marks which normally require switching between many ‘brushes’ in other programs. By eliminating explicit switching you can finally make expressive marks that capture your rhythm.
Water-based media have always been a challenge in digital painting technology. Many paint programs offer ‘watercolor brushes’, most of which are based on local diffusion or stamping scanned images. Nice results can be achieved but something important is missing – the fluidity. Our paint simulation, on the other hand, brings digital watercolor to a whole new level by using Computational Fluid Dynamics for natural flows. The use of GPU makes such a simulation fast enough for real-time interaction, even on a tablet computer.
Finally, the simulation is paired with a new rendering method that gives you both raster richness and vector-like output up to 12k resolution. You can export your artwork with alpha channel to your favorite image editor for further processing.
Please note that Expresii requires a good GPU to run smoothly. Not every system does have the right hardware so please try before you buy. If you encounter issue, please contact us at support@expresii.com before giving a bad review. We will try out best to help troubleshoot with you. Sometimes it’s really the GPU hardware or the driver behaving incorrectly, not our app. We have over a dozen systems spanning different hardware and OS combinations of Windows 7, 8, 10, and nvidia, AMD or Intel GPU, and Expresii works fine on all of them. Some of you may say your other paint programs don’t have issue on your systems – but please note that Expresii uses OpenGL and many other programs don’t. It is possible to encounter issue when you enable GPU support even in some big-brand creative suites.
FYI, Surface Pro X doesn’t support OpenGL adequately yet so Expresii won’t run on it.
