Review of ugly love: a novel:

In the beginning of Tate Collins’ relationship with airline pilot Miles Archer, she knows it isn’t love at first sight. The two would never even consider themselves friends. There is one thing Tate and Miles have in common: an undeniable attraction to one another. As soon as their desires are outed, they realize they’ve got the perfect set-up. Because he does not want to love, she does not have time for love, so all that is left is for them to have sex. The arrangement they’ve made could prove seamless, provided Tate abides by Miles’ only two rules.

He wishes she never asks about her past.

Never look to the future.

It seems to them they can handle it, but they realize almost immediately that they cannot.

They get sucked into the situation.

Trust is eroded

 rules get shattered.

And love gets ugly.

Colleen Hoover’s novels are distinguished by a little something extra: slam poetry, original music with a soundtrack, confessions from the masses accompanying original art; this story is no different. Throughout Ugly Love, one can see that ‘little bit more’ coming from Colleen woven into Miles’ perspective. There is something deliberately different about this text, a childlike narrative presented both high and low, explicitly childlike yet cuttingly clear.

If we have paid attention closely enough, we will realize what Colleen’s real intent was only at the very end of the novel. In that moment, you no longer have any choice but to gasp, hands flying to your mouth as you try to suppress your shock: the picture is now complete, with every terrible piece finally in place and you had no idea that it would happen.

In that moment, you no longer have any choice but to gasp, hands flying to your mouth as you try to suppress your shock: the picture is now complete, with every terrible piece finally in place and you had no idea that it would happen. At that point you realize you’ve been Colleen Hoovered again.

Despite his heartbreaking story, Miles is Colleen’s most emotionally wrenching creation. Throughout the novel there is great tension, both sexual and emotional, and Miles is usually not a particularly nice character. He intentionally hurts Tate by hiding his pain, which he uses to justify his behavior. However, as readers, we are privy to a side of Miles that Tate isn’t, so we can forgive these transgressions on Miles’ part while still maintaining sympathy for Tate’s situation.

Colleen Hoover is an author who keeps getting better with every novel she writes. In her words, she has a powerful emotional punch and she’s not afraid to push the boundaries a bit. This story was often uncomfortable to hold due to its obvious desperation. Nevertheless, being human sometimes means being desperate, despairing, angry, and ugly. This is human angst in its full glory, and I loved it.
